The Diocese of Bathery

pope-john-paul-IImar-baseliosHis Holiness Pope John Paul II bifurcated the Diocease of Tiruvalla and established the diocese of Bathery, appointed Most Rev Cyril Mar Baselious as the first bishop on 2nd Febuary 1979.

The diocese spreads over an area of 75,000 kms covering the civil districts of Wayanad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur & Kasaragode of Kerala, Nilgiris of Tamilnadu, Mysore, Mandya, Coorg, Hassan, Chickmangalure, Shimoga and south canara of Karnataka with 15 million people consisting of Hindu, Muslim, Christians and other tribes

We had 40 parishes, 18 priests at the time of the errection and today we have 124 parishes inclusive of our mission centers, Our apostolic and missionary endeavors helped to organize the people irrespective of cast, creed and Religion. A good number of our brethren could re-gain their ecclesial communion with the universal church.

We have at presented a total population of 25,000 Malankara Catholics with 99 priests, 272 religious both men and women belonging to different religious congregations serving in 124 parishes and mission centers.

The diocese of Bathery was bifuracated and a new diocese of Puttur was established on 25th January 2010 by the Holy Episcopal synod of the Church and Most Rev Geevarghese Mar Divannasios was appointed as the First Bishop

Most Rev. Dr.Joseph Mar Thomas, the present bishop of Bathery was ordained Bishop on 19" February 2005 by Most Rev. Cyril Mar Baselios and was appointed by pope John Paul II as Apostolic Visitator to North America & Europe and Auxiliary bishop of Thiruvananthapuram. He was transferred and was jostph Mar Thomas appointed as the third bishop of Bathery on 25th January 2010.

We are confident that under his guidance and leadership emerging from his vast knowledge and experience In socio-economic, educational/ and missionary/ pastoral fields, will pave the way for a third stage of development in the whole process of evangelization in the diocese and the church at large.

From the very beginning since 1979. top most priority was given to the socio- pastoral formation of the faithful always responding to the basic demands and needs of the people. Thus we have shreyas for social action, Srothas for catechetical formation, Pratheeksha for the youth formation.a minor seminary "Guru kulam" and a Bishop's house 'Dharmapitam'. A good majority of our parishes and mission centers have decent churches for worship and prayer. We remain ever grateful to God, and late Most Rev. Cyril Mar Baselios, Mar Divannasios. Msgr. Thomas Thannickakuzhy for the same.

After three decades of our missionary pastoral Involvement, we realize that it is high time that we built a cathedral church, a long cherished wish of our late Mar Baselios,Mar Divannasios. priests, lay-faithful,the Religious and all the well wishers around us. Our present bishop has already sparked this wish of ours and thus is necessitated a project of this nature which demands a lot of sacrifice from our part as well as yours.

We envisage this Cathedral church as a living monument and symbol of the unity of the churches and mankind. Let it be a source of spiritual enllghtment to all people, irrespective of cast, creed and religion.

May I request you of your valuable prayers and financial assistance for the realization of this noble venture of ours.....
